    Research Activities

    EUROMOD - Tax-benefit microsimulation model for the European Union (2009 - 2021)       [ Web Page ]

EUROMOD is a tax-benefit microsimulation model for the European Union (EU) that enables researchers and policy analysts to calculate, in a comparable manner, the effects of taxes and benefits on household incomes and work incentives for the population of each country and for the EU as a whole. As well as calculating the effects of actual policies it is also used to evaluate the effects of tax-benefit policy reforms and other changes on poverty, inequality, incentives and government budgets. EUROMOD is a unique resource for cross-national research, designed to produce results that are comparable across countries and meaningful when aggregated to the EU level. The current version of EUROMOD represents the accumulation of technical developments and expertise over a number years and involving a large team of people. For more information about EUROMOD's design and development, including a current project, go to EUROMODupdate. This project is financed by by DG-EMPL of the European Community.

Social Inequalities in Portugal - The impacts of the crisis and of the adjustment program (2014 - 2016)

The observed reduction in relative poverty and inequality analysed in the previous study was reversed after 2010 with the increasing economic and social crisis and the fiscal austerity measures implemented. Rising unemployment, falling earnings and pensions, and the reduction in the entitlement and value of social benefits had a profound impact on the living conditions of the whole population, but particularly on its most vulnerable groups. The main goal of the project is to describe and analyse the impacts of the crisis and of the adjustment program on income distribution in Portugal. This project is financed by Fundação Francisco Manuel dos Santos.

    GINI Growing Inequalities' Impacts (2010 - 2013)       [ Web Page ]

The GINI Project studies the economic and educational drivers and the social, cultural and political impacts of increasing inequality with novel contributions on the measurement of income, wealth and education inequality. GINI combines an interdisciplinary analysis that draws on economics, sociology, political science and health studies, with improved methodologies, uniform measurement, wide country coverage, a clear policy dimension and broad dissemination. This project was financed by the 7th Framework Programme of the European Community.

    Social Inequalities in Portugal (2010 - 2012)       [ Web Page ]

The main goal of the project is to describe and analyse how the inequality in personal distribution of income in Portugal has changed since the 1980s. The appraisal of the main changes that have taken place in the inequality in the distribution of income requires the integrated study of the following modules: Analysis of the inequality in Portugal and comparison with the other developed countries, especially those of the EU;Study of the main trends underlying how inequality has developed, linking it to the economic growth and changes that have taken place in relation to the lives of the population; Identification of the main factors explaining the inequality, namely through the use of techniques that break down the inequality into socioeconomic groups and sources of income; Description of the association between inequality in the personal distribution of income and wage inequality; Partial assessment of the redistribution impacts of fiscal and social policies on the income distribution; Compilation of a set of suggestions about how to develop important information in order to study inequality in Portugal. These suggestions may eventually be the catalyst for further work in this field in the future. This project is financed by Fundação Francisco Manuel dos Santos.
