Objectivos
1.Understand the importance of economic sustainability in theory and practice.
2.Understand the long-term effects of government deficits and debts on the economic growth and development of an economy.
3.Understand the short-term effects of deficits and how counter-cyclical fiscal policy can help in the short-run.
4.Understand the macroeconomic costs of decreased policy flexibility.
5.Consider how to define the rules of economic policy applying to the main economic measures of sustainability and growth, for example, with respect to deficits and debt.
6.Consider the importance of political-economy issues. Why do we need rules in the first place? To protect people from their governments or to protect governments from themselves?

Metodologia de avaliação
1.Ongoing student assessment during the semester accounts for 50% of the course final mark and includes:
?One group presentation.
?One group discussion.
?Participation in classes.
2.Students who have an average mark below 10 values on the ongoing student assessment will not be able to take the final written exam in the normal examination period, but can take the final exam in other examination periods.
3.The overall final mark will consist of: 50% of the average mark from the ongoing student assessment (see point 1) and 50% of the mark obtained in the final written exam.
