Objectivos
This unit frames development against the backdrop of the Anthropocene and a series of crises/challenges questioning endless growth, bridging economic theory and socio-ecological systems through an inter-disciplinary perspective, and exploring transitions for sustainable futures. In addition to introducing a wider context to economic perspectives on development, the unit zooms in on the urban/rural, helping students to explore the nature of development challenges through lens of urbanisation, offering the necessary theoretical/methodological instruments. Learning outcomes: 1) Knowledge: comprehend theory/practice of interconnected economic, environmental, social and political dimensions of development, from global to local scales; 2) Abilities: think systematically and critically about transition pathways connecting development and sustainability; 3) General competences: attitude needed to practice inter/trans-disciplinary approaches to development studies.
Programa
Module 1: Sustainable Transitions in the Anthropocene? provides the theoretical background, exploring the notions of progress, modernity, inequality and unsustainability, and the challenges they pose in the Anthropocene. The module examines these ideas within the theory and policy of development transitions, and discusses the potential of UN SDGs.
Module 2: Urban development, planning and governance? provides an understanding of the drivers of urban development framed by challenges and opportunities of the Anthropocene. The module examines how economic structures, social interaction and institutions shape urban development framed by the climate change impacts/policies.
Module 3: Ecological resources and urban/rural challenges? focuses on the urban development/sustainable ecological development nexus. The module discusses energy transitions and climate change adaptation; and questions the urban/demographic growth of many developing regions for its implications in rural areas.
