The EDP 2020 Richard Branson Visão Innovation Prize is a joint initiative of EDP ("Sponsor") and Visão magazine ("Promoter"). The aim is to encourage innovation and entrepreneurship in the Cleantech area for the energy segment by awarding a monetary prize of €50,000 (fifty thousand euros) (the "Prize") to an innovative project not yet implemented.
The following categories from the Cleantech area for the energy segment are considered:
a) Clean forms of energy generation: renewable sources for solar thermal (heat and cold), photovoltaic, wind (onshore and offshore), hydro, marine (wave and tidal), geothermal, biomass, hydrogen production, and also hybrid technologies;
b) Energy efficiency: highly effective and efficient technologies and systems that optimize or reduce energy consumption;
c) Smart grids: remote monitoring and diagnostic systems, control technologies and intelligent network management, smart metering;
d) Energy storage and distribution: storage of electrical energy from renewable sources, for example through the introduction of new and more efficient batteries, fuel cells and hybrid systems, power distribution technologies for electric vehicles.
The EDP 2020 Richard Branson Vision Innovation Prize aims to support a viable, differentiated and innovative project, with great potential for applicability and with a clear impact on carbon reduction and consequent contribution to a low carbon economy. The projects should demonstrate approaches to achieve economic, environmental and social objectives, complementing the Cleantech component with a business component with the potential to contribute to sustainable development.
