In 2025, we become ISEG Research.
ISEG Research in Economics and Management is the newly established R&D Unit at ISEG, University of Lisbon.
Born from the merge of CSG - Research in Social Sciences and Management , and REM - Research in Economics and Management, this new unit strengthens ISEG's collective research capabilities.
Research Groups
Data Science, Technologies, and Innovation
This research group brings together experts in information systems, operations management, and innovation management. They focus on addressing the significant challenges posed by the rapid evolution of digital technologies, including big data, data analytics, virtual and augmented reality, the metaverse, the internet of things, mobile technologies, and blockchain.
Principal investigator - Nuno Crespo
Development Studies and Sustainable Transitions
The Development Studies and Sustainable Transitions group is set for a fundamental rethinking of development in the current times of uncertainty and insecurity, with profound shifts in global relations, inequalities, and forms of exclusion. It is a collective of scholars empowered to inform transformative and structural change, under the recognition of global, climatic, economic, political, and institutional challenges.
Principal investigator - Alexandre Abreu
Econometrics and Statistics
The group maintains a dual commitment to advancing Statistics and Econometric Theory, while also applying these advancements to tackle pressing societal challenges. Their work spans a variety of areas, including investment and risk management, financial markets, macroeconomic policy, urban planning, public policy and education, environmental and health economics, as well as demographic changes and their economic implications.
Principal investigator - Adriana Cornea-Madeira
Economic Sociology, Organisations, and Work
The research integrates diverse fields, like sociology of work and organisations, human resources management, organizational behavioural, entrepreneurship and knowledge management, labour and health economics, gender studies and welfare policy, engaging in ground-breaking studies resulting from collaboration and co-creation with firms, social partners, non-governmental organisations, governmental agencies, and end-users.
Principal investigator - Ricardo Alcobia Rodrigues
Finance and Accounting
This research group brings together experts in actuarial science, mathematical finance, and operations research. Our actuarial science experts pioneer realistic models of dynamic risk sharing and management, focusing on longevity risks in pension funds and healthcare. In mathematical finance, the group is dedicated to the Green Energy Transition, concentrating on the pricing of renewable energy certificates through structural models based on underlying factors. We also explore sustainable use models for renewable natural resources, including fisheries and forests. In operations research, the group addresses critical challenges, such as aerial vehicle routing for power line inspections, optimizing healthcare systems, port logistics in supply chain management, faculty timetabling, sustainable network design, food bank management, and warehouse management in e-commerce.
Principal investigator - Mariya Gubareva
History and Economic Futures
The group focuses on long-term economic and financial analysis, supported by quantitative archival data on states and markets. History better captures the dynamics of institutional and cultural contexts and the diversity of innovative responses that have emerged in societies, businesses, and economies, while guiding long-term policy and economic decisions.
Principal investigator - Antonio Castro Henriques
Macroeconomics
The group is dedicated to applied and policy-oriented research, focusing on critical issues within both the Portuguese and European economies, but also delving into global economic issues. These include climate change, corruption, economic freedom, external imbalances, financial-market risk, and fiscal policy. A specialized team delves into theory, methods, and quantitative macroeconomics, producing top-tier scholarly work, which covers topics such as counterfactual macro-epidemiology, estimation, and identification in DSGE models, and income-distribution dynamics.
Principal investigator - João Jalles
Mathematical Methods and Models
In Operations Research, the group will tackle problems of aerial vehicle routing for power line inspections, faculty timetabling, healthcare system optimization, port logistics in supply chain management, food bank management, sustainable network design, and warehouse management in e-commerce.
In Actuarial Science, the group will expand our studies to include realistic models of dynamic risk sharing and management, and problems related to longevity risks in pension funds and health care.
In Mathematical Finance, the group will focus on the Green Energy Transition and related financial derivatives. The group will study the pricing of renewable energy certificates focusing on structural models based on the underlying factors, and plan to study several models for the sustainable use of renewable natural resources, like fisheries and forests.
Principal investigator - Cristina Requejo
Microeconomics
The group studies the impact of international trade on labour markets, examining how it influences the dissemination of ideas and skills, shaping inequality. The group explores just-in-time trade, investigating its roles in inventory management, networks, and supply chains, and how these shape global economic dynamics. Leveraging on newly available Portuguese admin microdata, like transaction and personal income tax records, the group examines the interplay between firms, intangibles, and customer markets to understand firm dynamics and productivity. In urban economics, the group investigates the broader costs of Portugal's housing affordability crisis, to inform more effective urban policy strategies.
Principal investigator - João Pereira dos Santos
Strategy and Marketing
The group explores relevant topics regarding organizations' strategy and marketing considering the individual (consumers, entrepreneurs), social (relationships, interactions), and macro (companies, industries, governments) levels. The output of our future contributions aims to inform national and international decision-making actors (e.g., managers, public policymakers, consumers) across diverse domains, leveraging insights from emerging research areas, including: Technology and marketing; Marketing with purpose and consumer behaviour; Digital ecosystems, business ecosystems, and business networks; Entrepreneurship and Business Models; International strategy.
