Dudley Seers Lecture | Development Studies in an Age of Crisis

10 Jul from 18:00 to 19:30
Calouste Gulbenkian Foundation & Online

We are experiencing an era of overlapping crises in the economy, democracy, health, environment and so on, with serious consequences for all areas of social reproduction. During this open class, the professor Alfredo Saad Filho (King's College London) will examine the challenges of these crises for developing countries, the prospects for development, and the lessons for Development Studies in light of Dudley Seers' key contributions.

Since then, the field of Development has been transformed by the global transition to neoliberalism, the rise of financialization, the economic slowdown in advanced economies, the rise of China, the spread and degradation of neoliberal democracy, the tragic impact of Covid-19, and by the catastrophic implications of the environmental crisis. Analysis of development problems must not only address these challenges, but also seek alternatives and inspiration for new generations of students, practitioners, and activists in the Global North and, more importantly, in the Global South.
