Surfing events generate revenues of 23 million euros

The event that brings together the world's surfing elite at Supertubos Beach, which took place between March 6 and 16, generated more than 20 million euros, while the big wave championship, held at Praia do Norte on January 22, generated revenues of more than three million euros, according to the study of the socio-economic impact of these two WSL events in Portugal, prepared by Diogo Melo, a master's student at ISEG, Lisbon School of Economics & Management. The "lion's share" of the revenue is related to the consumption of goods and services during the stays to watch the events, with spectators in Peniche spending 13.3 million euros and those in Nazaré 1.7 million (in a single day). For Peniche, accommodation generated 4.5 million euros, transport 2.5 million euros and food 2.8 million euros, while 3.5 million euros came from other sectors of activity, for a total of 13.3 million euros. In Nazaré, transport generated 671 thousand euros, food 592 thousand euros, accommodation 567 thousand euros and others 601 thousand euros, for a total of 1.7 million euros. As for the costs of organizing the races, the Peniche stage reached 3.5 million euros and the Nazaré stage 800 thousand euros. In both cases, the amount spent by the race sponsors was not taken into account, nor were the economic impacts related to image as a result of media exposure (written press, radio, television and internet). With regard to the origin of foreign visitors, Brazilians led the way in both events, followed by Germans, Spaniards, French and Americans in Peniche, and Americans, Spaniards, French and Poles in Nazaré. England, Holland, Australia, Italy and Canada are also among the countries of origin of a significant proportion of visitors. The study, for which the WSL is responsible for collecting and processing the data, and which is based on 1500 questionnaires, a sampling error of 3% and a confidence level of 95%, reveals that the majority of spectators are aged between 18 and 44 and that 94% have an academic degree. The Portuguese leg of the World Surfing League (WSL) main circuit, held in Peniche, and the big wave event in Nazaré produced revenues of over 23 million euros in 2024. By TPN/Lusa
