Resumo
Growing environmental concerns and demand for environmentally friendly products, along with regulatory pressures to decrease the environmental impact and fight climate change, have driven a number of companies to make green innovation an important part of their strategy.
The main objective of this study is to understand L’Oréal’s green innovation practices in products and processes adopted, as well as the enablers and barriers found in their adoption, and the main outcomes achieved in terms of environment. L’Oréal, a global leader in beauty and innovation, is showing the compatibility of environmental performance and economic development through its commitment to sustainability. Green Innovation Practices enhance environmental performance and gain a competitive advantage in the market.
In this study, the qualitative method was chosen, with descriptive nature and a single case study strategy was used. Data collection included semi-structured interviews with workers, participant observation, and the examination of company documentation.
The study reveals that L’Oréal has implemented several Green Innovation Practices which can be divided in innovation in green packaging, green formulas and green innovation in the product and green labelling, for products. Regarding processes, these practices are related to a responsible use of water, use of renewable energy, green technologies, green packaging, and green logistics. Furthermore, some drivers such as strong culture, investment in R&D, market demand, collaboration, technology, employee training, and environmental legislation were identified. Besides that, L’Oréal also faced challenges in regional suppliers, technical expertise, market-related, environmental standards, and resources. In terms of performance, in 2023, the company decreased greenhouse gas emissions from industrial activities by 74% and reached 100% renewable energy in 131 locations.
