Abstract
In this study, we document and assess the relationship between railways and the spread of literacy in Spain. By mid-19th century, illiteracy was widespread across the country. However, this was also a period marked by the early expansion of the railways and the enactment of the Public Instruction Act of 1857, which introduced an education system. While post-elementary education (universidades, institutos) remained under the control of the central administration, the provision of primary or elementary education relied on local forces, or municipalities. Within this context, we explore the extent to which the railways expansion affected municipal literacy growth between 1860 and 1910. To this end, we develop a novel database with municipal-level information for peninsular Spain. Furthermore, we explore how the railways could have stimulated the transition from an oral to a written tradition.
