International Students

Who can apply as an international student?

Candidates who meet all of the following conditions are eligible to apply as an international student:

  • Does not hold Portuguese or an EU Member State nationality;
  • Is not a relative of a Portuguese or EU national;
  • Has not lived legally in Portugal for more than 2 years, continuously, on January 1st of the year intended to be admitted to ISEG;
  • Not be a national of Iceland, Norway or Liechtenstein;
  • Has not applied for admission to higher education through the special regimes;
  • If you meet the requirements given above, you may apply as an international student.

Access and entry conditions

General Information for International Applicants

  • Holders of a qualification that, in the country in which it was obtained, entitles them to apply and enter higher education in that country. It must be proven that the qualifications held guarantee access to higher education in the country of origin;
  • Holders of a Portuguese secondary school diploma or legally equivalent qualification;
  • For applicants coming from foreign education systems where the provisions of Decree Law 606/2022 of May 20, 2022, submission of similar evidence (examples of accepted evidence) defined in the D-L. Candidates who do not take a similar test will be able to take the ISEG entrance exam at the end of the First Application Phase, on the scheduled date. If there are no places on the course chosen, candidates may choose another course or be included on the waiting list.
  • An independent command of the teaching language of the study cycle to which they are applying - minimum level B2, according to the Common European Framework of Reference for Languages (CEFR), not applicable to applicants from Portuguese/English-speaking countries.

Specific Information for Brazilian Applicants

Brazilian appplicants wishing to apply for degree courses under the international student contest must meet the following conditions:

  • Be graduates of a course in the Brazilian secondary education system, attaching their transcripts;
  • Have passed the National High School Exam (ENEM) in the calendar year or three calendar years prior to the application.

Areas of knowledge analyzed (ENEM exams)

  • Mathematics and its Technologies (MT) 
  • Writing (R)

The final classification must be equal to or greater than 700 points, determined by weighting the classifications in these areas of knowledge.

Calculating the Average ENEM Score

Weighting:

  • Mathematics and its Technologies - 80% (MT)
  • Writing - 20% (R)

Calculation formula: (MT*80%+ R*20%)/5

Minimum final mark of 140 (Portuguese scale)

Only candidates with a classification equal to or higher than 14 values.

The documents must be notarized (in Brazil) so that the Hague Apostille can be placed on them. Consult information here.


Specific Information for Chinese Applicants

Chinese applicants wishing to apply for degree courses under the international student scheme must meet the following conditions:

  • Be a Chinese high school graduate, and have passed the Gaokao or Linkao exam, taken in the calendar year or three calendar years prior to the application;
  • Have obtained a minimum score in the Gaokao or Linkao exam of 50% out of the maximum score for each province/region;
  • Minimum score of 140 (Portuguese scale).

I don't have Legal Equivalent Exams. Can I apply?

Candidates who do not submit a homologous proof or equivalent will be automatically enrolled in the respective Mathematics or Economics Entrance Exam, organized by ISEG, in a face-to-face format.

In exceptional situations, duly justified, the test may be taken in an online format (MSTeams). Candidates who take the test in person will be exempt from an interview.

Candidates who take the tests online will be subject to an oral exam to assess their knowledge.

The evidence will take place on February 14th. In the 2nd application phase, ISEG will not organize any entrance exams.

Candidates taking the exams online must access MSTeams from 9:00. Candidates absent at the start time of the exam (9:30) will not be allowed to take the exam. 

To take the tests, candidates must have a computer with a camera and microphone, as well as good internet access.

At the end of the exam, candidates must be able to produce a pdf file with their answers. Image files (e.g. photographs) are also accepted, as long as the result is legible. An additional 15 minutes will be given to submit the exam.

Mathematics

Mathematics Entrance Exam

The exam consists of a written test marked out of 20 and lasting 120 minutes, covering content taught in Mathematics A in Portuguese secondary education (10th, 11th and 12th grades), in particular: radicals, powers of rational exponent, polynomials, analytical geometry of the plane and space, trigonometry and trigonometric functions, exponential and logarithmic functions, succession, limits, general study of real functions of real variable, combinatorial calculus, probability and complex numbers.

The use of a calculator is permitted. However, access to any bibliographic material, such as tables or forms, is not permitted.

In order for the application to be considered, the minimum entry mark in the Mathematics exam will be 14 (13.5).

The Mathematics exam taken at ISEG will be valid for 3 academic years. This validity only applies to ISEG. Candidates who wish to do so may propose to improve their grade in the following 2 academic years.

Economia

Economics Entrance Exam

The exam consists of a written test worth 20 marks and lasting 60 minutes, covering content taught in the subject of Economics in Portuguese Secondary Education (10th, 11th and 12th grades).

How do I apply?

The application is online, through the Fénix platform, in accordance with the application calendar, which is approved annually. To submit your application, please click here.

Required documents:

  • Photo;
  • Photocopy of passport or equivalent legal document;
  • Proof of completion of secondary education, as well as all the grades and averages obtained, the scale on which each grade was awarded, and the minimum and maximum value in each case. The document must be validated by the competent authority in the country to which it refers;
  • Higher education entrance exam, homologous proof or other evidence recognized as such;
  • Motivation letter (you should indicate, in a maximum length of one page, why you are interested in applying as an international student at ISEG, your strengths, your areas of interest and what your expectations are);
  • Proof of language proficiency, according to the language of instruction of the course for which you are applying (minimum level B2, of the Common European Framework of Reference) - not applicable to applicants from Portuguese/English-speaking countries);
  • Educational and professional curriculum (Curriculum Vitae - CV);
  • Declaration Under Oath: a document stating that you meet the requirements to apply for this competition (no European nationality, no direct Portuguese relatives, among others).

Notes:

  • For the application to be submitted, a non-refundable fee of 60 euros is due.
  • The application will only become valid and effective once all the necessary elements and documents have been correctly submitted and the respective application fee has been paid by the deadline set for submission. If payment is not made by the specified date, the application will be annulled.
  • Failure to submit the above-mentioned elements within the set deadlines will invalidate the application and the services will proceed to cancel it.
  • Errors or omissions made when filling in the electronic application form are the sole responsibility of the applicant.
  • Making false declarations will result in exclusion from the procedure, annulment of the selection process or registration and enrolment, depending on the stage of the procedure at which it is detected.
  • Documents must be certified by the consular service.
  • Whenever documents are not issued in Portuguese, English, French or Spanish, they must be translated into one of these languages by a certified translator.
  • The academic training mentioned in the curriculum must be proven with the corresponding documentation.

Selection criteria

The President of ISEG is responsible for conducting the process of admission to the competition and the selection of applicants for the degree programmes, and the final results are approved by him.

The ranking is done in descending order of the application grade, based on the criteria mentioned below:

Applicants with Legal Equivalent Qualifications:

  • The final average grade (scale from 0 to 20) obtained in secondary education contributes 50% to the final classification;
  • Classification of the entrance exams or final exams of similar foreign education, contributes 50% to the final classification;
  • Final classification: results from the average of the classification obtained in Secondary Education and in the entrance exam, presented on a scale of 0 to 20;
  • Admission of applicants: only applicants whose final grade is equal to or higher than 14 (on a scale of 0 to 20) will be admitted;
  • An online interview may be requested.

Note: In the case of Brazilian and Chinese applicants, the final classification for application purposes is equal to the grade obtained in ENEM or Gaokao/Linkao.

 Applicants without a Homologated or Equivalent Test

  • Candidates without a homologous or equivalent test (within the expiration date) are automatically enrolled for the Mathematics access exam o be held on a date to be scheduled.
  • If there are no vacancies in the desired course in the second phase, applicants can change their course selection, as long as they fulfil the language requirements and there are still vacancies available.
  • Waiting list: Applicants who are not admitted because there are no more slots available, will be included in a waiting list and may be called in order of ranking, if admitted applicants withdraw.
  • Candidates who take the Mathematics exam at ISEG will apply exclusively with the mark they obtain in this exam.

Only complete applications will be analyzed.

Enrolment and registration

  • In the event of admission, it will be conditional on the presentation to the Academic Services during the indicated deadline, of the originals (or certified photocopies) of the documents presented, certified by the consular service or presented with the Hague Apostille, by the competent authority of the State from which the document originates;
  • Enrolment and registration must be done by the deadlines set by ISEG, otherwise the right to a place will be lost;
  • Placement is only valid for enrolment and registration in the academic year for which the application is being made;
  • Whenever an applicant fails to enrol and register in time, the ISEG Academic Services may place the next candidate on the waiting list, until the place is filled.

Withdrawal

In case of withdrawal there is no refund of the payment made. The student is only exempt from paying the instalments of the tuition fee that have not yet fallen due.

Tuition fees 2025/2026

Admitted applicants must enrol and register by the specified deadline.

At the time of enrolment and registration, a compulsory payment of 2.253,00€ must be made towards the annual attendance fee (tuition fee), plus the registration fee and insurance.

These are the provisional tuition fees for 2025/2026, subject to confirmation by the statutory bodies of the University of Lisbon.
