Worker-Student

The legal regime applicable to student workers is currently governed by the Labor Code, approved by the Law no. 7/2009of February 12, by Chapter III of the Law no. 105/2009of September 14, and by the Regime of Employment Contracts in Public Functions, approved by the Law no. 59/2008The aim is to promote the development of these workers through the granting of benefits and educational requirements appropriate to their condition.

It is considered student-worker anyone attending any Bachelor's or Master's degree course at ISEG who is in one of the following situations:

  1. Employee (in the service of a public or private entity, regardless of the employment relationship);
  2. Self-employed (self-employed professionals or sole proprietors);
  3. Attending a vocational training course or an official program for the temporary occupation of young people, lasting six months or more;

Note: Student-worker status is maintained for those who, while covered by it, are involuntarily unemployed.

How to obtain status

Deadline
From September 9 to October 31, 2024 → Status valid for 1st and 2nd semester
From January 27 to March 31, 2025 → Status valid for 2nd semester only

Documentation required

1 - Employee:

  • Public institutions:
    • Declaration by the employer, signed and authenticated with a white seal or stamp.
  • From private institutions:
    • Declaration by the employer, signed and authenticated with a stamp or notarized signature;
    • Statement from the Regional Social Security Center proving the deductions made.

2 - Self-employed (self-employed professionals or sole proprietors):

  • Copy of the declaration of commencement of activity issued by the Finance Department,
  • A copy of your tax return for the previous year;
  • Declaration from the Regional Social Security Center proving the deductions made. In the case of exemption, a statement from the Regional Social Security Center proving this must also be submitted.

3 - Professional training course:

  • Statement from the sponsoring organization of the course or program, signed and authenticated with a stamp or recognized signature, indicating the start date, duration of the course or program and respective accreditation.

Benefits

Status valid for 1st and 2nd semester → Possibility of taking a maximum of four exams in a special assessment period for full degree students (or two exams on a partial basis) or two exams for master's degree students, for curricular units whose enrollment covers the entire academic year;

For Master's students enrolled in MFW (master final work), the possibility of submitting the MFW at a special seasson, date that can be consulted here;

Status valid for 2nd semester only → Possibility of taking a maximum of four exams for full degree students (or two exams on a partial basis) or two exams for master's degree students during the special assessment period for curricular units whose registration only covers the 2nd semester.

  • The Student Worker Status can only be requested within the time limits mentioned above. Thus, a student who becomes a worker after the deadline covering the status for the 1st and 2nd semester has passed can apply for the status, but it will only be valid for the 2nd semester;
  • A possibilidade de realizar, no máximo, quatro exames, para alunos de licenciatura em regime integral (ou dois exames em regime parcial) ou dois exames para alunos de mestrados, em época de avaliação especial, não invalida a obrigatoriedade de efetuar a inscrição na referida época. A inscrição está sujeita ao emolumento fixado por unidade curricular,
  • They lose the rights enshrined in the law when they fail to pass in two consecutive years, or three interpolated years (point 2 of article 95 of the Revision of the Labor Code, Law no. 7/2009, of February 12). Academic success means passing at least half of the subjects in which the Student Worker is enrolled (rounding down if necessary). In the year following the one in which he/she lost the benefits provided for above, the student-worker may regain them, provided he/she requests it;
  • The absence of any of the above elements means that student-worker status will not be granted: Decree-law Nº320-A/70 Law Nº116/97
  • Draft Employer's Declaration (issued on company letterhead), can be drawn up according to the following model:

For the purposes of applying for Student Worker Status at the Instituto Superior de Economia e Gestão da Universidade de Lisboa, I hereby declare that (name of student) is employed by this company under the following conditions:

  • Type of employment contract
  • Contract start date

  • Registered with Social Security under no.
